“I am often asked why I do not speak about my painting; for when I apply the paint to the canvas, I have truly said all that needed to be said”

– Alexandre Bandzeladze

Alexandre Bandzeladze (1927-1992) is an outstanding representative of the so-called “1960s Generation”. His creative journey began in the 1950s during the Soviet era and spans an impressive variety of forms, from painting and graphic art to book illustration and monumental works. Renowned for his experimental approach, Bandzeladze pursued non-figurative expression throughout the 1960s, blending an intuitive sensitivity with a deep-rooted observational style. His work is pivotal to Georgian abstract expressionism and played a foundational role in inspiring the 1980s generation of Georgian nonconformist artists, marking a milestone in the evolution of modern Georgian art.

In the 1980s, Bandzeladze’s non-figurative abstract paintings reached a mature synthesis of his artistic vision. His works from this period are defined by a nuanced palette and carefully balanced contrasts, delivering a visually harmonious experience. A standout work from this era, Dream by Drunk Noah, captures Bandzeladze’s engagement with religious themes, transforming them into narratives that invite a transcendental interpretation. His legacy remains a cornerstone in Georgian art history, recognized for its bold exploration and enduring influence on generations of Georgian artists.
